Dear Sir/Madam,

We wish to express great concern about thefts from/damage to 2 motorhomes of the Silk Route Motor Caravan Club, on their journeys as unaccompanied freight. One, Land Rover reg. no. NTS 31 belonging to Mr Norman Seddon on Grande Amburgo. The other, Euramobil reg. no. BU51 JKJ belonging to Ms Olwyn Cupid on Grande Brasile.

Unknown to us, both vehicles were left unlocked and unattended by crews, with keys in the ignitions, despite unsuccessful pleas from drivers of accompanied motorhomes parked alongside each unaccompanied vehicle that they be allowed to lock our unaccompanied ones and look after our keys. All are Silk Route Club members. The inevitable happened somewhere during the crossings, and the unaccompanied motorhomes were entered and robbed at leisure.

To the Land Rover the following occurred. All locks on the roof boxes were cut, using bolt cutters. 2 pairs of boots, 1 waterproof outer coat, 2 sand ladders and 2 waterproof containers were stolen. Total replacement cost would be 700 Euros.

In the Euramobil, security boarding between the cab and living accommodation was forced, causing damage, and the following items were stolen:
1 satellite radio, 1 car audio control panel (which had been hidden), 1 Polaroid camera, pieces of jewelry, 2 jackets, 1 raincoat, 1 compact flash half gigabyte card, 1 Pentax Camera, US$70 and 50 Euros in cash. Total replacement cost would be 1200 Euros.

When the Seddons and ourselves arrived at BA to collect our motorhomes, we were firstly upset by the losses and damage, and secondly we were astounded and annoyed that our ‘homes on wheels’ had been left unattended. Surely an invitation for crew or port visitors to enter them.

Please see the attached photograph of the Euramobil’s interior, taken immediately upon arrival at BA, on board Grande Brasile. It must be clear to you that your duty of reasonable care was not carried out. If we had taken out marine insurance, it would have been of no use due to this total absence of security.

We see the fault as yours, and we would like to claim compensation please. Also, it is hoped that when you transport unaccompanied motorhomes and their contents in the future, there will not be repeats of what happened to us.

Yours sincerely,

Olwyn Cupid
